Like fellow soul legend Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hitch created some of his best music while working on a film soundtrack, in this case the cult blaxploitation film of the same name. Featuring soul balladry and funky anthems in equal measure, Hutch proved to be the perfect match for the socially-conscious Richard Pryor flick both in content and spirit. Of the album's many timeless cuts, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" is rightfully singled out, featuring a dazzlingly upbeat brass section that will cause even the most reserved listeners to dance. Elsewhere, "I Choose You" is one of the '70s truly great heartfelt ballads, and it's helped Hutch fnd a contemporary audience thanks to UGK sampling the chorus on their smash hit "International Players Anthem." While it shares plenty in common with Superfly and Shaft make no mistake that The Mack has a sound all its own.

When an act called Sisters Love were offered a cameo in the blaxploitation film The Mack, their manager suggested that Willie Hutch do the soundtrack. It came to be one of the great '70s film scores, including a pair of classic funk tunes, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" and the title cut. The results proved to be another soundtrack that far surpassed the quality of its film.
