After spending a few years of what amounted to an identity crisis, Aerosmith managed to find a perfect balance between the hard rock that first made them famous and the pop sensibilities they'd grown to embrace when they released Pump in 1989. Rather than lean too hard on radio-friendly ballads, Steven Tyler and the band packed a heavier punch on similar ballads like "What It Takes" and "Janie's Got a Gun" while injecting similarly poppy hooks into hard-hitting songs like "Young Lust." Aerosmith have tried to replicate this formula on every album they've put out since, but none of them can quite match its potency the way Pump did.
