In 'N Out

Smack in the middle of Henderson's excellent Blue Note recording streak, the young sax master laid down three of his own compositions next to two by trumpeter Kenny Dorham on In 'n Out. The album captures Henderson, Dorham, McCoy Tyner on piano and Elvin Jones on drums, after the height of bop but before a period where jazz would shoot off in every direction. The post-bop here is rambunctious, and while Henderson's own writing is smart, everyone's solos are the real stand-out material. With Dorham's original pieces nearly outshining Henderson's, In 'n Out displays a classic team at their best.

Joe Henderson's third Blue Note release (which is here reissued on CD along with the addition of a previously unissued version of the title cut) matches the very distinctive tenor with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham and an unbeatable rhythm section: pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. Henderson, who has always had the ability to make a routine bop piece sound complex and the most complicated free improvisation seem logical, and Dorham provided all of the material and the music still sounds fresh over three decades later.
