In 1969, after serving what amounted to a producer-in-training stint at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One, Lee "Scratch" Perry began one of his frequent reinventions, this time emerging as the Upsetter, and he applied the name not only to himself but also to his new label and to the backing group he had assembled. The Upsetters were a fluid unit and initially consisted of studio veterans Gladstone "Gladdy" Anderson, Winston Wright, Hux Brown, and Clifton "Jackie" Jackson. This set is actually much more Upsetters than Upsetter, and keys primarily on Wright's bright organ playing. It's fun stuff, if not exactly like the heavier dub innovations Perry would slide into further on down the road.
