AMG Review of Give Me Every Little Thing
Andy Kellman
All Music GuideThe DFA label's fifth 12" is a split release between the Juan Maclean and the Rapture, who both provide teasers for upcoming full-lengths. The left-field silicone disco-funk of "Give Me Every Little Thing" nearly trumps "You Can't Have It Both Ways" as the Juan Maclean's best to date; a group chant that could've been lifted from a lost Brass Construction or Kleeer single is repeated over a slamming backbeat, robust bassline, and synths that alternately twitter and glisten. The Rapture that shows up on the B-side is the dour, neo-post-punk version, with overexaggerated Robert Smith vocals, scrawling guitars, and a tightly reigned-in, simplistic rhythm pattern. It's all but dwarfed by the A-side, but it's no throwaway.
