MOG Editorial Review
Be Strong kicks off with the sort of build we'd expect from a '70s disco single, but it doesn't take long for the duo's penchant for chaotic rhythms and a vintage-sounding brass section. The groove descends into vibraphone hits, the track ends, and the next drops a four-to-the-floor stomper, just to finish up the the record's mission statement: let's dance. From there on out it's bass-driven UK house music and pop, complete with pitch-shifted, vocoded shout-outs to past musical greats, and smooth, boyish vocals, à la lead singer Joe Goddard's work with Hot Chip. "Bear Hug" is the record's most hilarious jam, "Work" is radio-ready pop, and "Church," on the other hand, ties together a sincere subject with an understated melody, becoming the album's standout track as it gives us a breather from a collection of killer dance cuts.
