On their latest album, Brooklyn rockers the Big Sleep manage to cover two decades of alt-rock history, combining shoegaze guitar solos with spacey post-rock vibes, ethereal vocals, and an all-around grungy sensibility. While the guitar riffs themselves would normally belong to a more upbeat band, the Big Sleep somehow make it work on sprawling tracks like "Wood on the Water," and the grittiness of it still feels charming thanks to the vocals of Sonya Balchandani and Danny Barria. It's a potent formula, and one that feels forward-thinking even as its members look to the recent past for inspiration.
