After spending years as a beatmaker for hip-hop heavyweights like Cam'Ron, producer Abraham Orellana became a surprise dance music sensation with Electronic Dream, his proper debut as Araabmuzik. Despite his background, the hip-hop influences here are subtle, instead taking his inspiration from both sides of the pond, as nostalgia for trance music co-exists with spacey bass music and R&B-tinged vocals. What's just as fascinating as the juxtaposition is what it does to perception, as songs like "Feeling So High:" not only act as an adrenaline rush, but revision of club tracks the usual indie dance fans usually despise. Like the best kinds of surprises, Electronic Dream is unexpected and more welcoming than we could have imagined.
