Over ten albums into the career, the Roots have already proven that they're hip-hop's greatest band time and time again, but undun is the work of an act with limitless ambitions. A concept album telling the story of a drug dealer named Redford, allowing Black Thought to rap his way through the struggles that come with addiction to both drugs and money. As always, it's easy to forget that ?uestlove and the gang are creating each and every beat with their instruments, a credit on sleek tracks like standout "Make My," which features one of the few guest spots in up-and-comer Big K.R.I.T. The other notable guest star here is Sufjan Stevens, who reprises his moving piano track "Redford," something that not only inspired the album's protagonist, but a jaw-dropping four-part movement to close one of 2011's finest hip-hop records as well.
