Ten years after her last album, Miami R&B legend Betty Wright finally returned with this killer collection backed entirely by none other than the Roots, a band perfectly suited to showcase her jazzy, soulful sound while tweaking it for the hip-hop generation. Opener "Old Songs" sets the tone immediately, with Wright finding an appealing middle ground between funky joy and sorrowful nostalgia, looking back on her glory days in the midst of her comeback. Elsewhere, cameos by Lil' Wayne ("Grapes on a Vine") and Snoop Dogg ("Real Woman") find both Wright and her collaborators stretching outside their comfort zones in the best way possible, showing that Wright's messages translate with today's audience as much it did in the '70s.
