Black Flute

Following an avant-pop debut EP filled with vocals and guitars that were reminiscent of Animal Collective, Keepaway have finally released their first full-length, Black Flute. Is it a hit? Right out of the ballpark. The trio's sound has matured into its own chilled-out brand of carefully nuanced pop, equipped with its own warped vision of a playful, cross-pollinating present, with drum machines, range-encompassing synths and keys, careful, odd guitar parts, and strangely baroque-friendly vocals. Black Flute sounds like lead singer Nick Nauman has the past in mind without the hang-up of ever being nostalgic about it. This could really only have been made now, and that's where Keepaway are firmly planted.
