In what turned out to be a match made in heaven, Mick Collins and his Dirtbombs project breathed new life into soul classics by giving them a garage rock spin on Ultraglide in Black, the album that found them hitting their stride for the first time in 2001. Collins, already a mainstay of Detroit's rock scene at the time, had grown up with soul, and it shows when he keeps the spirit of artists like Curtis Mayfield ("Kung-Fu") and Stevie Wonde ("Living for the City") in tact while making the songs his own heavy, intense creation. This is especially telling when you hear the one original tune in the album, the organ-laden "Your Love Belongs Under a Rock," fits in astoundingly well in a series of classics that will sound great to a rock fan unfamiliar with soul and even better to someone who is.
