MOG Editorial Review
Equal parts blue-eyed soul revivalist and crate-digging hip-hop geek, Mayer Hawthorne has finally hit his stride with the release of How Do You Do, his major label debut. Kicking off with slow jam "Get to Know You" might make new listeners question Hawthorne's sincerity, but by the time you finish standout "A Long Time," it's hard to deny his enthusiasm for the R&B of his native Michigan. Throughout, it's clear that Hawthorne is a full-time student of soul music, and despite his questionable diversions into sensual territory, charming upbeat numbers like "Finally Falling" more than make up for any missteps, and How Do You Do just might be the album that gets a whole new crowd to fall in love with soul music as much as Hawthorne has.
