One of the most iconic bands of the '80s had their moment of complete and utter genius when they release The Queen Is Dead in 1986. While the Smiths are known to this day for crafting charming pop-rock gems, this album proved that they could be more sophisticated than anyone previously thought, something that's evident from the dreary opening of the title track. Of course, it wouldn't be a Smiths record without memorable hooks and turns of phrase, and Morrissey provides plenty of those on "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" and "There Is a Light and It Never Goes Out." While the were a rock band that spoke to our inner-teens, the Smiths showed that they could do so in the most mature way possible with The Queen Is Dead.
