While previous output had Megafaun exploring the space-rock sphere, their self-titled release finds them sitting comfortably in a straightforward folk-rock mood. They’re as inspired by the hippie bands of yesterday as much as they are the Southern rock sound, which lends an approachable and familiar air to Megafaun, not to mention a band finally falling into a comfortable sound after Bon Iver's departure. The piano is at the center of the ballad “Hope You Know” as well as the gospel-tinged “You Are the Light,” which gives the North Carolinians ample room to showcase their maturing songwriting skills. “Isadora,” meanwhile, shows they haven’t lost their more experimental side, as the jazzy number is like a whirling Frank Zappa tune, serving as a refusal to fit in with the indie folk pecking order.
