Sweet, danceable pop songs like “Colours” and “Naked Kids” had Grouplove on everyone’s radar before they had a full-length release to their name, and Never Trust a Happy Song finds them living up to expectations on their own terms. While the aforementioned tracks operate in a folky/MGMT-ish realm, Grouplove brings rockabilly-tinged fun to “Chloe” and mesh acoustics with club beats on “Tongue Tied.” Elsewhere, the ukulele opening of “Spun” provides another example of their knack for cutesy moments powered by high-energy guitars. The boisterous songs showcase the band’s giddy exuberance and prove to be their best moments. Never Trust a Happy Song might not be breaking new ground, but it makes for a carefree listen, soaked in L.A. sunshine.
