Country or otherwise, few artists in any genre seemed as genuinely strange and unique as John Hartford was right around the time he released Aereo-Plain in 1971. Not quite a country, bluegrass, or folk album, Hartford shifted back and forth between whichever sound struck him as the best vessel for his satirical, smarter-than-they-look lyrics. Whether it was the "Turn Your Radio On" tracks that bookend the album or ridiculous mumblings of "Boogie," Hartford was unafraid to both challenge and alienate country audiences. Regardless, he'd sometimes put this sense of humor and ear for top-notch arrangements to good use, especially the heartfelt "Tear Down the Grand Ole Opry."
