In the Mountain in the Cloud is Portugal. The Man’s sixth album, and it’s also their major label debut. In the case of the Alaskan band, who have released a slew albums and EPs while tightening their psychedelic sounds evenly along the way, it’s a cohesive follow-up to 2010’s American Ghetto. By way of amping up the electronic drums, adding horns and strings, it’s clear Portugal. The Man have hit their stride and show now signs of slowing down. Standouts include “So American,” a dreamy update to the sounds established by David Bowie and T. Rex, and the horn-ridden grandeur of “Everything You See (Kids Count Hallelujahs)." For a band on the verge of a new audience with their label deal, this is one band that definitely picked the right moment to tweak their sound to perfection.
