Kendall Jane Meade's solo debut probably isn't exactly what many listeners would expect from a former member of the sassy East-Coast outfit Juicy. Where her previous band was all pep and pop, Meade's five-song EP as Mascott shimmers with the hushed, introspective angst and lush atmospherics of the Softies and labelmates the Shoestrings. Sure, the folk-tinged Electric Poems may occasionally sound too wistfully romantic, as Meade sings about the more painful matters of the heart, but beneath her wavering vocals is a wide-eyed determination that keeps the EP from sounding unnecessarily melodramatic.
