On their debut album, Brooklyn act Widowspeak manage to master the art of the slow-burning rock jam, feeling lazy-paced and immediate at the same time, not to mention spurning indie trends in the process. Tracks like sultry standout "Gun Shy" feature the band at their best, as they manage to create something that's downbeat while staying distinctly rock rather than atmospheric or hazy like many of their Brooklyn peers. This is the kind of album best-reserved for when both the temperatures and the sun both go down, introspective and even a bit gritty in a way few other bands today are capable of pulling off.
