MOG Editorial Review
With each successive album, YACHT have been able to delve deeper and deeper into philosophical concepts while keeping their playful electro-pop sound in tact, and Shangri-La serves as their best effort yet. Centered around duo Jonah Bechtolt and Claire Evans' recent fascination with the ideas of "Utopia" and "Dystopia," YACHT turns Shangri-La into a full-blown exploration of heaven and hell, paradise and its opposite, all while keeping hooks and inviting synths in tact. While there are plenty of the danceable beats we've come to expect over the years, Shangri-La is also the first time we've seen them take on a proper ballad in the form of the title track, and the heartfelt (but still off-kilter) track is proof that they have more range than they're usually credited with.
