Continuing to create some of the strangest, darkest bedroom pop sounds around, singer-songwriter John Maus has managed to create songs destined to find him a big audience while still keeping his weird side in tact on We Must Become Pitiless Censors of Ourselves. Equally influenced by Joy Division and frequent collaborator Ariel Pink, tracks like "Quantum Leap" and "Cop Killer" are spooky despite having strong hooks and even a bit of a dance-rock vibe, which should be a testament to how powerful Maus's baritone really is. However, it's "Hey Moon" that serves as the album's true standout, showing his talent for creating beautiful avant-pop ballads.
