Pint Of Blood

While her distinctly spacey Americana sound remains in tact, Pint of Blood finds Jolie Holland shifting her lyrical focus to heartbreak and bitterness, and the subject change allows listeners to hear her in a refreshing new way. Sometimes, Holland plays the angry, spurned love on songs like "Remember," while she feels triumphant on the piano-driven "Tender Mirror." As always, though, it's Holland's seductive vocals that truly sell the songs, sometimes reflecting her Texas upbringing with a bit of alt-country flavor and other times warbling or mumbling through a song, all in a way that feels distinctly hers despite the varied styles.
