On their debut album, this Portland act manages to give a modern indie rock spin on '60s psych-rock that captures the essence of the past while updating it in the process. With song titles as trippy as the music itself ("Ffunny Ffirends"), Unknown Mortal Orchestra combine lo-fi production with groovy drums, psychedelic riffs, and an overall sound that owes as much to the Beatles' later efforts as it does any current indie bands. Regardless of its origins and inspirations, Unknown Mortal Orchestra manage to sound surprisingly fresh and current in 2011 thanks to inventive songs like "How Can You Luv Me," and we can only hope they'll continue keeping indie rock weird for years to come.
