Indie folk is the kind of genre where even the slightest adjustments can determine whether you sink or swim, and Fink's Perfect Darkness is, thankfully, the kind of album that benefits from the singer-songwriter's light experimentation. The spirit of songs like "Yesterday Was Hard on All of Us" and "Wheels" are as intimate as any modern folk you'll find, but it's the layer of sound just below the surface that makes Perfect Darkness feel sprawling and haunting. Touches of ambient electronica and string sections help separate Fin Greenall from the pack, but it's to his credit that his voice alone is strong enough to carry an album, and his tender croon makes the sound it accompanies feel like anything but a gimmick where it might otherwise.
