On their sixth studio album, Black Lips ushered in the production talents of Mark Ronson. He manages to not only streamline their garage rock sound, but to expand it as well, adding vocal harmonies, musical saws, and acoustic guitars to the mix. They’re as satisfying amid jangly folk tunes (“Spidey’s Curse”) as they are at pepping up for the melody-driven sweetness of “Go Out and Get It.” The whistle-happy “Raw Meat,” meanwhile, recalls The Ramones, who were as influenced by proto-punk as they were by rock standards. Coincidentally, Arabia Mountain seems to find the Black Lips at the cross section of their punk influences, as they pull more surf-rock and country-tinged sounds into their songwriting. Luckily, Mark Ronson didn’t disappoint in his producing tasks and has provided an inspired rejuvenation of the Black Lips at the perfect time.
