Despite having such an off-putting name that might signal an irony overdrive, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s debut album is one of the most charming releases of 2011 so far. Having more in common with the Beach Boys at their poppiest than indie rock, the Detroit act manages to combine sugary vocals with slightly darker electronic elements on songs like "Nothing But Our Love," all of which is surprisingly earnest given their name. Elsewhere, the band continues to rep its hometown and their own underdog status on "We Almost Lost Detroit" and "An Ugly Person on a Movie Screen" respectively. If you're looking for a sunny pop record that doesn't as impossibly happy as most songs in the genre, you can't go wrong with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
