MOG Editorial Review
Originally intended as his debut album several years ago, rising emcee Blu's jazz-heavy early work is finally seeing a proper release, one that shows that he's far from a run-of-the-mill buzz rapper. Kicking off with audio snippets from movies like The Life Aquatic and Buffalo 66 over light piano jazz, Blu immediately keys on the theme of neurotic love. Rather than go for massive beats, Blu continues to use jazz throughout, and it allows for a welcoming, relaxed flow over samples from Billie Holiday among others, while the continued appearance of speeches from indie flicks shows his identification with neurotic romeos. While his style has changed over the years thanks to collaborations with producers like Exile, Her Favorite Colo(u)r is the work of someone with something different to say than his peers.
