After the loss of bassist Mathieu Bourlique in early 2002, the three remaining members of Q & Not U decided to continue alone. On Play Patterns is the first release in such a form, through which they prove that they are fully capable of producing their quirky rock anthems as a trio. The first track, "Ten Thousand Animal Calls," shows a slight remembrance of things passed while moving the band in a bit more boiled-down, experimental vibe. They still rock, but they do so with a bit more ease. The second track, "Soft Pyramids," which starts off with the rhythmic spelling out of the title, moves into a jazzy, melodic jam with much more calm spirits in mind. This single should prove to be a precursor to another excellent release from Q & Not U in the near future.
