R&B vet Raphael Saadiq's career received a second wind in 2008 when his Motown-era themed album The Way I See It caught on with critics and fans alike. 2011's Stone Rollin' takes the old school soul idea and expands it even further, adding a grittier, unhinged essence that captures the spirit of the live performance and adds an even bigger dose of funky guitar riffs. Stone Rollin' takes us back to a time where R&B music wasn't just a complimentary piece to hip-hop, and stands on its own two feet as the showcase. It's a little ironic that the freshest R&B music is now being made by reaching into the past, with Saadiq and Janelle Monae leading the charge.
