The latest solo record from Minutemen co-founder Mike Watt is easily his best yet, spanning 30 short adrenaline-packed songs that find their inspiration in everything from punk to opera throughout. While Watt has long been known for his punk attitude and DIY spirit, the legendary bassist's less-heralded influences are what make Hyphenated-Man stand apart. Considered an opera in the loosest sense of the word, each of the tracks found here have hyphenated titles, but also share a cohesive musical vision even if each has a different tempo and sound. There are traces of jazz and beat poetry on opener "Arrow-Pierced-Egg-Man" while "Belly-Stabbed-Man" has some old fashioned guitar shredding, all accompanied by Watt vocals that teeter between spoken-word and screeching freak-out. It's a solo effort that will get most of its attention for sheer weirdness, but anyone that looks beneath the surface of Hyphenated-Man will be delighted with the diversity they find on each and every track.
