AMG Review of Extra Special!/Somethin' Groovy!
John Bush
All Music GuideThis two-fer includes Extra Special! and Somethin' Groovy!, two of Peggy Lee's late-'60s albums recorded for Capitol. The albums are average at best, featuring swing-era chestnuts and vocal standards given a breezy, quintessentially '60s feel by producer David Cavanaugh. Lee's voice is warm and solid on both records, though her talents at reading a song are continually tested by period arrangements and silly crossover attempts. In the end, Extra Special!/Somethin' Groovy! is best for obsessive collectors and vocal fans who like to live on the edge of camp material.
