After self-distributing their debut album and scoring a deal with indie juggernaut Sub Pop, music geeks across the country finally get to discover Seattle act the Head and the Heart for themselves. With a sound that seems to have more in common with Nashville than the home of grunge, the band creates an earnest folk-rock sound whose sincerity is quick to dispel skeptics. "Down in the Valley" showcases them at their most quiet and intimate, while the confessional "Heaven Go Easy On Me" makes for a rousing closer, filled with bouncy keyboards and the kind of crooning that adds muscle to an already strong chorus. The Head and the Heart may be a young band, but the fact that they self-produced a debut this poised ought to make you pretty excited for whichever direction they choose to go in from here.
