You'll be hard-pressed to find a more intriguing debut album this year than Anna Calvi's self-titled record, an effort that blends brooding guitars with a voice that belongs in the gray area between theatrical and seductive. It's easier to think of Calvi's tracks as mood pieces rather than songs, bringing a sense of sorrow and drama even if you're not listening closely to the lyrics. "The Devil" is as sinister as the title suggests, and provides a blueprint for Calvi at her finest, putting you under her calming spell before crashing to Earth with thunderous drums and even louder riffs. Even if you have trouble singing along, it's hard to argue that Anna Calvi has made a truly evocative debut.
