Crazy For You

Pulling from classic girl-group themes of heartbreak and longing while adding her more aggressive and at times frustrated spin on the sound, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino explores love-hate relationship themes throughout her debut, with “Goodbye” serving as a prime example. The song highlights the simplistic lyricism and listless delivery she’s good at -- “I lost my job, I miss my mom, I wish my cat could talk.” “Our Deal,” perhaps an anthem for the hook-up generation, finds Cosentino driving herself crazier with undeclared feelings, which are well matched to distorted guitars and summertime melodies. Yet there’s no better representation of what Best Coast is about, than the album opener “Boyfriend,” and the title track. While the aforementioned shows her wanting something she can’t have, the latter finds her reveling in the contentedness that comes along with finding herself in love, and who can’t relate to both?
