The Runaways

At the time of its release, there was nothing like The Runaways. Not only were they capable musicians, on par with the likes of hard rock favorites Aerosmith, but they were also still teenage girls as well. While Joan Jett would go on to gain breakout solo success and Lita Ford would make an impact in the hair metal sphere, their outing as The Runaways would pave the way for any female rockers that came after them. Through hard-edged tales and a tougher-than-nails attitude, they brought us “Cherry Bomb,” “You Drive Me Wild,” and “Lovers,” none of which shied away from sexual overtones. While The Runaways’ chart-climbing success fared better outside the US, the legacy of the first all-girl hard rock band has proved a pivotal point for female artists, and a must-listen for anyone looking to get familiar with the women's rock canon.
