As always, the latest album from prolific Brooklyn punks Japanther is full of messy, artsy fun, but Rock 'n' Roll Ice Cream manages to be their best yet thanks to a few subtle touches and tighter production. Especially noticeable is the duo's further embrace of hip-hop, adding a remix of Skuffed Up My Huffy standout "100 Dollar" and the incredibly goofy "What the Fuck Is the Internet?" Songs like "She's the One" and "Surfin' Coffin," though, remind us that the band's strength has always been adrenaline-fueled lo-fi anthems, and even as that style has become flavor of the month, few have as fun creating it as Japanther.
