MOG Editorial Review
After enjoying plenty of success as an innocuous teen pop star, Neil Sedaka opened a new chapter in his career with Solitaire, hooking up with left-field rock act 10cc for a collection of ambitious pop-rock tunes. Though Sedaka's knack for perfect piano melodies and smooth vocals remain, everything that surrounds Solitaire, with sophisticated arrangements ranging from rollicking rock ("That's When the Music Takes Me") to orchestral pop ("Trying to Say Goodbye") expanding his newfound mature sound. In some ways, the sound of Solitaire was just a year or two ahead of its time despite signaling a new era, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that the fragile title track eventually received the fame it deserved.
