In the decade and a half, Gil Scott-Heron has been to hell and back, which shows throughout I'm New Here. Featuring many lyrics he composed during his heyday in the '70s, the poems and songs here take on a new light as a result of Heron's weathered voice, abused by years drug addiction and jail stints, turning many once hopeful lyrics into something much darker and engaging. However, it's the production handled by XL Recordings chief Richard Russell that makes this one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory, relying on a plethora of modern electronic styles to showcase Heron's voice and words in a new light. Whether it's the Kanye West sample on opener "On Coming From a Broken Home" or the rolling handclaps of "New York Is Killing Me," Russell has discovered the purpose sound to compliment this new version of Heron, one that's looking back with regret while feeling lucky that he's new here at age 61.
