MOG Editorial Review
Though much of Grandmaster Flash's fame comes from his innovations as a DJ, his debut album with the Furious Five also pushed hip-hop to new heights. A time capsule for the genre's early era, The Message spends its first few tracks exploring disco and established R&B-inspired sounds before heading into uncharted territory. Starting with electro jam "Scorpio" and ending with the politically-charged title track, Flash and the rest of the crew don't hesitate to take risks. Between their innovative sound and their, ahem, message, there's no questioning the album's status as a stone-cold classic.

AMG Review of Message [UK Bonus Track]
Ron Wynn
All Music GuideGrandmaster Flash & the Furious Five merged the Afrocentric consciousness expressed by such early rappers as Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets with b-boy production to create "The Message," an all-time rap anthem. It was the focal point of this LP, which also included "It's Nasty" and "Scorpio," two other strong cuts that might have been winners on their own. Unfortunately, rather than a starting point, this album proved to be their ultimate peak.
