MOG Editorial Review
As they've pointed out in past songs like "Over and Over," electro-pop masters Hot Chip will avoid repetition at all costs, and while that's hindered past albums, they've perfected the art of the surprise on One Life Stand. While songs vary between soulful slow jams ("We Have Love") and house-infused numbers ("We Have Love"), there's a cohesion on Hot Chip's fourth album that had been lacking previously. There's still goofy wordplay, sure, but these are songs all focused on a specific kind of hopeful love, and it binds the songs together whether they're serious or tongue-in-cheek, and while One Life Stand lacks a true banger like "Over and Over," they've still made the best start-to-finish album of their career so far.

AMG Review of One Life Stand

All Music GuideWhen thinking of Hot Chip, wonky dancefloor movers like “Ready for the Floor” spring to mind. But on One Life Stand, they don’t sound ready for the floor -- they sound ready to settle down. This is immediately apparent on “Thieves in the Night”; despite its four-on-the-floor pulse and careening synths, Alexis Taylor's yearning is palpable when he sings “happiness is what we all want.” That urge drives most of these meditations on accepting that you only have one life to live, so you should find someone you love and live it with her or him. This intimacy is an unusual move after Made in the Dark brought Hot Chip so much acclaim, but it also shows they’re in it for the long haul.
