MOG Editorial Review
No band defined New Orleans funk better than the Meters, and this short hits collection manages to capture their essence in just 16 tracks. Arguably a less out-of-control version of funk compared to peers like Parliament and James Brown, the Meters managed to incorporate the music that made their region famous, with touches of swampy rock and soul seeping into groovy jams like "Cissy Strut." If the fact that their music will get you dancing in your chair wasn't enough, this compilation also shows off the Meters' tender side, and ballads like "Heartache" can go toe-to-toe with the soul crooners of the time.

AMG Review of Very Best of the Meters [Rhino]
Richie Unterberger
All Music GuideIn keeping with the drift of Rhino's Very Best Of volumes, this 16-track disc provides a more concise, budget-minded retrospective for listeners who might not want a set that offers twice as much or more (in this case, Rhino's own two-disc Funkify Your Life anthology). That's not necessarily a criticism -- funk grooves can get tiring over the course of two hours if you're not a rhythm fiend. Should you want to keep your Meters to the one-sitting level, this smartly chosen, well-annotated set is fine, including all of the cuts ("Cissy Strut," "Sophisticated Cissy," "Look-Ka Py Py," "Hey Pocky A-Way," "Fire on the Bayou") you'd expect to find on a greatest-hits set.
