MOG Editorial Review
While the movement serves as a mere footnote to the Beatles and the British Invasion at large, you'll find no better example of the soul-infused pop-rock known as Merseybeat than this compilation by the Searchers. Best-known for their cover of "Love Potion No. 9" as well as opener "Sweets for My Sweet," the Searchers provide a perfect look into the kind of music being created right as Beatlemania was getting ready to sweep across the globe. Though they turned out to be less adventurous than their Merseyside counterparts, it's hard to deny high energy gems like "Alright" and the melancholy sweetness of "Since You Broke My Heart," the kinds of pop melodies that may have had a glass ceiling, but are undeniably enjoyable almost half a century later.
