On their second album, Swell Maps displayed even more ambition and confidence than on their debut, which was a plus. Even though their music was still somewhat fragmented, Jane from Occupied Europe was more focused and compelling than their debut. [The album's 1989 Mute reissue included eight bonus tracks, but Secretly Canadian's 2004 edition only had two, "The Stairs Are Like an Avalanche" and "New York."]
