Cut

As the first punk generation began incorporating styles like dub reggae, disco, and funk, many groups took on a sort of twisted fusion sound, an alternative vibe to its strict rock, pop and noise elements. The Slits followed that curve, starting out as a straightforward punk rock outfit, then letting dub reggae and ska become primary influences on their first studio record. As a result, Cut is both their essential album and a defining moment for post-punk. Cut also sports some of the best female vocals on record, the whole band at times singing backup behind the incredible Ari Up. To boot, these are some of the best songs about heroin, giving comics and records back to an ex, and the emptiness of mainstream consumer culture you'll ever hear in any genre.
