AMG Review of Journey Thus Far

All Music GuideVP’s 2009 compilation of Morgan Heritage’s output for the label hits most of the group’s important numbers, with the most arguable omission being the 2008 hit “Raid Rootz Dance.” Otherwise, this is a well-chosen introduction to the family group that in the age of dancehall has kept the roots reggae spirit burning with socially conscious lyrics and live instrumentation. If you’re unfamiliar with their work, start with “Nothing to Smile About,” a heart-wrenching trip through Jamaica’s slums, and if you’re a longtime fan, be reminded of important but underappreciated numbers like “Jah Seed.” Either way the set satisfies, especially on the CD/DVD edition, which adds the group’s videos plus footage from a live appearance in Africa.
