Although impressive, the five songs which comprise Coalesce's A Safe Place don't seem to measure up to the rest of their respective catalog. Granted, the rhythm section holds things down quite capably, but the guitars seem extra sludgy, even for a band known for their thick guitar tone. Sean Ingram's vocals compliment the guitar, sounding bloated and agonized, accenting the right chords and portions of the songs. The guitar is still frenzied and the snare hits all the right points of attack with it. At five songs, this release is really hard to get a feel for, but is still very representative of the Coalesce sound, although another release might be more suited for a first-time listener.
