It may be hard to pinpoint the true birth of hip-hop, but you'll find no better way of tracking its beginnings and evolution than this retrospective of the legendary Sugarhill Records. Beginning with the infamous "Rapper's Delight," nearly every hit from the old-school era gets a chance to shine here, whether it's "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" or Melle Mel's "Beat Street." What's just as enjoyable here, though, is getting a chance to hear the era's deeper cuts, whether it's the groovy "Funk You Up" by the Sequence or Funky 4+1's "It's the Joint." If you're looking to get down and get an education in New York hip-hop at the same time, The Sugarhill Records story is the album for you.
