Originally released on the Stang imprint in 1972, At the Miss Black American Pageant makes great strides to correct the inconsistencies and dinner theater-esque quality of the early Moments live recordings. "If I Didn't Care" and "Key to My Happiness" are the only two performances that ring constant throughout the group's repertoire. The remainder of the disc is an eccentric, if not interesting selection of tunes that are soul anthems and include "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "It's Your Thing," and "What Does It Take," mixed with soft rock/Burt Bacharach compositions. The performances are highly spirited, but fall short of the bar which the group set so high for themselves with their earlier material.
