It's not quite as country as the title makes out, but one of Ray Charles' finest moments came when he added a dash of experimentation to his soulful sound for this two-part series. Mainly taking its cues from from country ballads in addition to the usual R&B leanings of Charles, the end result almost comes off sounding like a twangy version of lounge-ready swing music on standouts like "You Don't Know Me." These Modern Sounds are far removed from the upbeat numbers that made Charles famous, but it's impossible to argue with the results of something as moving as his cover of Don Gibson's "I Can't Stop Loving You."
